High Beech

High Beech (or ‘High Beach’) is the only village inside Epping Forest, and is said to have derived its name from an early description of its sand and gravel exposures, which may have been deposited by a river valley that joined the ancestral Thames. People from all over come to enjoy the large open spaces and two exceptional pubs, the Kings Oak and The Owl – particularly in the summer months. There is another, more eerie reason for travelling to the area. Hangman’s Hill is the shortest of three roads that form a small triangle near Holy Innocents Church. In the dead of night, if you park your car in neutral car at the foot of the hill you may find it start to roll upwards, defying gravity. Legend has it that vehicles are pulled towards an ancient tree by a ghostly hangman’s noose…
